Woman writer

Image of woman writer

This is a picture of Christine de Pisan, a French woman, who was one of the first women to earn a living by writing. She lived in France from about 1365 to 1430 and wrote more than 20 books. The picture is found in a manuscript in Christine's own handwriting.

This book was produced in Paris for the wife of Charles VI of France, Queen Isabella of Bavaria. It was most likely purchased by John of Lancaster in 1425, whom we know purchased the library of Charles V of France. Then it was owned by various aristocratic English families, before being incorporated into the newly founded British Museum in 1753.
